It all started with a dream of a place to share ideas. And make money; lots and lots of money. So much money we can swim in the $100 bills. So much money we can light cigars with benajmins without a second thought.

A dream needs a plan. So we made one. Step 1, provide a place to share ideas, photos, stories, and find all this cool stuff. But make it so you find what you want, not what you don't. So, we can't just tell everyone to go use Facebook or Picasso. We have to build it, and then they will come.
Step 2. We do something, along the lines of marketing, to make sure everyone on Earth knows we exist, and that we are so cool.
Step 3. Money. Lots and lots of money. Benjamins raining from the sky by the barrel.
Step 4. Power. World domination, overlordship. Study up on the Evil Overlord List so we don't lose all that money and power.

After much work on the internals of web frameworks, we scrapped our project and started over. After a night of drinking and web searching, we decide to use Rails and Ruby as the framework for Phase 1 of the Plan for World Domination (TM).
Thus, we build a website for everyone to share their stories of adventure, find other stories, and find other adventurers to share new exciting times.
As the saying goes, we see farther because we stand on the shoulders of giants, and the giants can longer throw us off, so we're good.
