Welcome to Wilderness.com

Wilderness.com is an outdoor-adventure social network and portal with three major goals:

  • allow adventurers to share their stories, photos, and experiences;
  • connect fellow adventurers across the world for trips and discussion;
  • allow adventurers to find information from fellow adventurers.

As an outdoor-adventure portal, Wilderness.com allows members to publish their adventures for friends and others to explore. As a social network, Wilderness.com lets members find others with similar interests across the world, whether in your town or somewhere you hope to go someday.

Wilderness.com allows members to publish and connect in a number of ways. Members publish adventure stories using Adventure Blogs, which can have photos, podcasts, and other media to showcase your experiences. Exceptional photos can be published as stand-alone, cover-page photos after acceptance by Wilderness.com's judges. Users can build collections of blogs for future reference or to compile guidebooks to a place, sport, etc. Members can build forums for any interest and/or location, to help share information and tips.

Locations

Wilderness.com tags most content with locations by latitude and longitude. This allows searches to be narrowed by locations regardless of spelling or language, and helps users find what they want, where they want, when they want. Since locations are stored as a latitude and longitude, Wilderness.com maps locations back to a nearest town or placename when needed using a global name database.

Locations can be entered by hand from your notes, by clicking on a map, or by searching for a place name. All three options will result in a latitude and longitude to store into our databases. GPS tracks can be uploaded to blog entries so others can follow your routes and rides.

When searching by locaiton, Wilderness uses distance from a point, not place names, so our search tools will find all info near your chosen point even if people misspelled the name, used a different language, etc.!

Sports

In addition to locations, content on Wilderness.com is tagged with particular outdoor adventure sports. We try to cover as many adventure sports as we can, so users can find info on the sport they want. No more wading through thousands of hiking trips to find the rock climbing information!

Our sports are broken up into various categories, to help users find the sport they want quickly. Sports that are not listed should use the nearest match, and submit a request to add the sport to our listings. If we get enough such requests, we will likely add the sport to the list.

In addition to adventure sports, we use the sport listing for informative tags, such as whether an Adventure Blog has info about search & rescue, or has links to videos. These tags help users find content that cuts across various sports, such as epic trips.

Search

Wilderness.com has three major goals: allow adventurers to share their stories, photos, and experiences; connect fellow adventurers across the world for trips and discussion; and allow adventurers to find information from fellow adventurers. Wilderness.com includes a powerful set of search tools to let users find Adventure Blogs, photos, reviews, forum posts, etc. by location, sport, keywords, and more.

Because our search tools limit results by users' individual combination of filters, users can find what they want, where they want, when they want using our tools. Locations and sports are the most common filters, and quickly extract the relevant blogs, photos, etc. from our cloud of content. This is in contrast to typical web searches where trying to find the appropriate search terms can take days, and wading through the thousands of matching, but irrelevant, results takes weeks.
